brain cellsThere seems to be a lot of talk these days about fat and how eating it is not good for us and can actually make us unhealthy. Actually, there are several kinds of fats, some of which are healthy and some which are not healthy and can lead to disease. It is important to know the difference so you can make the choice which is healthiest for your brain and body. avocado

Our bodies are made up of trillions of cells. Fats make up much of our brain cells and parts of all of the rest of our cells. So we need to eat good fats to give our body strong building blocks with which to build our cells.

coconutFats that are good for us are found in fruits like avocado, coconut, olive, cold water fish, and raw nuts. Fats that are not so good for us are found in cookies, cakes, crackers, breads, french fries, restaurant food, and just about anything with a wrapper or in a package.

Your body breaks down and absorbs the foods that you eat by a process called digestion.

In order for your body to grow big and strong, you need to eat the right foods for stomachyour body to digest. Even if you are eating the right foods, you may not be absorbing all of the nutrients if your digestion is poor. Therefore, it is important to have great digestion in order for your body to be able to absorb the foods that it needs to grow properly.

carrotsOne key ingredient of good digestion is having the proper amount of stomach acid. Stomach acid helps break down the food in your stomach as well as make the minerals, like calcium needed to build healthy bones, easy for your body to absorb. Your body needs certain types of foods to help it make enough stomach acid for proper digestion. lemon

Some of the best foods that help your body make stomach acid are raw fruits and vegetables like carrots, leafy green vegetables, and lemon. One way to get regular raw vegetables is to eat salad every day. Fresh squeezed lemon juice, olive oil, and spices can make a nice salad dressing to put on top!

candiesSnacking is great when you get a little hungry between meals. However, some types of snacks can actually make you tired, cranky, and hungry for more while other types of snacks can satisfy your hunger, give you more energy, and keep you feeling great. When you know how to spot the ones that make you feel tired you will be able to avoid them and eat more of the ones that make you feel great.

The ones to avoid are: chips, cookies, candy, cakes, french fries, and white friesbreads. These make you tired because inside of your body, they turn to sugar very quickly and your body stores them just as quickly leaving you tired, hungry, and cranky. Here are a couple of ways to combine great, yummy foods, into delicious, healthy, energy packed snacks that make you feel great!

appleOne of my favorite snacks is sliced apple with cheese. This gives me a sweet, juicy, fruit, packed with energy and flavor, combined with a tasty piece of cheese that helps keep me satisfied and energized for quite a while. Another favorite of mine is sliced celery with peanut butter inside of the “u”. If you cheesecan’t eat peanut butter then use whipped cream cheese in stead for a hearty, crunchy, juicy snack. And my absolute favorite is sliced apple or banana with peanut butter spread on it or as a substitute (or pear and cheese). I encourage you to try a few combination of these and even make up a few new combination of your own.
